For Parents

Welcome Back to the 2019-20 school year!  Goal three of the Robbinsdale Area Schools (RAS) Unified District vision states that (RAS) will engage family and community members as partners. Part of that process included the development of the student handbook. The 2018-2019 Student Handbook: Rights and Responsibilities was developed by a collaborative group of administrators, students, union representation, parents and teachers from November 2017 to May 2018.  Through feedback provided from a variety of stakeholders, we identified common threads and incorporated approximately 80% of the suggestions. Recommendations from the committee incorporated into the handbook include:

  • The Handbook is on the district webpage under: Students

  • An emphasis on restorative practices and restitution

  • Reducing its length to make it more user-friendly

  • Incorporating a definition for School Resource Officer (SRO) and Threat Assessment

  • Developed an Administrative and Transfer Committee

  • Better defining defiance (currently, failure to follow directions) and disruptive behavior to reduce implicit bias

  • Adding guidance on discipline for young children

  • Consolidating offenses in order to reduce confusion and the potential for inconsistent discipline application

  • Improving definitions of behavior including the addition of prosocial language to understand expected behaviors

  • Changing levels to include district wide expectations, expected behaviors, infractions of expectations, and choices to address student infractions

  • The link for the parent opt-out form for testing

  • District policies linked into the handbook

  • Added the Chromebook agreements and guidelines in the handbook

  • Making the student handbook accessible online.  It is located on the district webpage under Students.

  • Handbook Committee will begin meeting end of September through March.  Teachers are interested they should inform their building administration.

Each building will have a 2019-20 Information Guide For Students and Families.  This building handbook shares important information related to your child’s individual school.  If you have questions, please follow up with your building administration at RMS:
